A GENTLEMAN NAMED "BASIL"
All things happen for a reason, which is often not apparent until some time later.  Some dogs come into the Greyhound Adoption Program and seem to wait longer that other dogs to find the right family couch to decorate.  And so was the story with Basil for no apparent reason.

Basil was the model foster dog - quiet - affectionate - good with small children - clean and greatly loved by his foster carers.

A beautiful dog to place in a home and twice it looked like Basil was off to a home.  But for one reason or another Basil missed out.
The reason why is now obvious - there was a family out there for him who needed him badly after a much loved dog of many years passed away suddenly leaving a huge hole in the home.  And Basil was ready and waiting, and has found the family home that was meant to be.  What follows is a letter from his new owners.

"A gentleman named Basil - And that's exactly what he is - our big beautiful Basil."

I was on the way to work at the Pick 'n' Pay Hypermarket at Aspley, where I picked up a leaflet at a GAP display at the main entrance to the centre and patted some beautiful greyhounds.  I took the leaflet home and did not think any more about it.

Then fated played a hand.  Sasha our beautiful Ridgeback became ill and after a few weeks back and forth to the vet she became seriously ill with liver failure.  On July 23rd we had to make the heard rending decision to have her put to sleep.  We were devastated.  We felt lost.

The GAP leaflet was on our noticeboard at home and I took it down and rang and asked if we could adopt a greyhound as soon as possible.  From what we had read about the greyhounds, they sounded to be such a similar temperament to Sasha.  The GAP girls pulled out all the stops and Basil came into our lives the following Friday.

He is so beautiful and gentle and has so much love to give.  We knew we could not replace Sasha, but he was just the tonic we needed.

He has his own doona, pillow, and designer leopard skin blanket (fake of course) which he adores.  We walk for miles each day and we hug and kiss him like it is going out of fashion - non of which he minds of course.  In fact he laps it up.  He is totally and thoroughly spoilt.  He sleeps in our bedroom and has fitted in with our family so easily that we feel like we have always had him with us.

We would not be without him now, he is out little ray of sunshine who has eased us through our grief.  Thank you GAP for "BASIL".

There is a saying in greyhound adoption circles that one dog passes on as another needs a home more.  So I like to believe that the reason that it took Basil a little while to find a home was that he was needed badly by a family.
