DASH
The Dash Story.

This amazing story starts with an extremely well bred pup destined for the race track.  His father - the sire of many champions - gave the potential for this son to be a fast race dog, was enormous.
His beginnings were at a humble rearing farm with other greyhound pups, but because of his stunning colour and markings he stood out against the rest.

What stood before him was the most fantastic, heart-wrenching story I have ever heard.

Coming of age, he was sent away, for a few weeks to be taught how to race on the tracks.  The reports that came back were good.  The next step was to give him his official race name and get him fit for racing.

During this period there was a tragedy in the owners family.  Dash, as he was known in the kennels, was aptly named after the family member who has sadly passed away.  He donned the racing name "Mal's Honour".

His trainer, who had looked after him from puppy hood, raced him around the Brisbane area.  He was nothing fantastic as far as a speed demon went, but he tried with all his heart.

The pressure on the owner's family was so great after their sad loss that they had to part with Dash.  Fortunately the trainer who had always looked after Dash, had a real soft spot for him, and was employed to continue training him.

When the time came for Dash to retire, his new owners were not in a position to take him home, so he was put onto the Adoption Program.  He waited and waited and waited for someone to pick him up, and teach him how to become a pet and find him a family, but it didn't happen.

After a phone call, it was found that Dash's application papers to come into adoption had been lost in the mail.  Our webmaster, who also had a Greyhound with the same trainer, developed a soft spot for Dash, and in desperation to get him onto the program contacted GAP and offered to build a website at no cost - hoping that this would get at least Dash some exposure and result in finding him a good home.

The offer was accepted by GAP and "Dash" was the first Greyhound picture to appear on the website.

He was soon after taken into foster care, where it was realised just how much of a wonderful, gentle dog he was.  It wasn't long before a caring family was found.  He was taken to his new family who also had a Chihuahua. Dash loved the little dog and his future with this family looked really good.

A few months later, GAP received a call from the family, whose circumstances had unfortunately changed and it meant that they could no longer have Dash.

The family was devastated, they had fallen in love with a beautiful Greyhound who gave them his heart and sole, but the family considered his safety before they considered themselves and Dash was sadly passed back to GAP.  This was really unfortunate and very sad.

Because Dash was now 6 years old, it would be hard to find anyone who would want a dog who was that old.  Then came a call from a nursing home, who was interested in a Greyhound as a pet.

The greyhound they had in mind would have to be quiet, well behaved, people friendly and YOUNG - about 2 years old.

Dash filled the criteria as far as quiet, well behaved, people friendly - BUT YOUNG ??  We knew that he would be ideal for this situation and convinced the nursing home just to have a look at him, even though they considered him too old.  Well that was it….LOVE at FIRST SIGHT.

He was taken around the nursing home and introduced to the residents who also fell in love with this gentle giant instantly.

Needless to say, Dash's Adoption papers were completed straight away.  They all agreed that Dash was the Greyhound they had been searching for.

Because Dash is so special to us all, provision was made to check up on him regularly, and if there was the slightest problem, he would come back to GAP.

Dash now has a loving home for life, with a big family, he is loved deeply and dearly by all.  He is very special to them all and they really make an extra big fuss of him on special occasions like Easter, Christmas and his birthday.   Dash deserves all the love that he is showered with, which he returns ten fold….

This proves to us that Dash was not born to be a racing dog.  Just by being a magnificent looking greyhound with a heart so full of love he has accomplished what world leaders cannot do to this day.
